Latinas Unidas Unite for Community Service and Fun
San Marcos, Texas, Nov. 21, 2011—Latinas Unidas will be participating in the annual Sights and Sounds holiday celebration in San Marcos, Texas.
Every year the town hosts a celebration full of holiday cheer for everyone to come and enjoy. This year from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 Sights and Sounds will be celebrating 25 years. Sights and sounds is a carnival held in the San Marcos plaza park. There will be carnival rides, a 70 foot skating rink, arts and crafts booths, a food court and two stages where one can enjoy live music.
Latinas Unidas will be volunteering and helping with the booths. Not only will they help with the booths, they will also enjoy the holiday spirit which is felt all throughout the carnival. In the past, the members of Latinas Unidas have enjoyed doing community service with Sights and Sounds. Last year they helped with the selling of hot chocolate.
The president of Latinas Unidas, Jessica Oyoque, who has been a member for three years explained that volunteering with the other members is not just another event that they participate in but it is a way to connect and have fun. Nelly Vasquez has also been a member for three years. “Sights and Sounds is an event where the members can volunteer, but more importantly bond with each other,” Vasquez said.
Not only can the members of Latinas Unidas come and enjoy the event through volunteering, they also invite those who are interested in becoming a member to spread the holiday joy and bond during the upcoming holidays. They encourage those that this event is something that the members will remember years to come.
Latinas Unidas started at Texas State University- San Marcos in the fall of 2004 by six members who gathered to discuss topics that were common among each other. Topics such as homesickness, first generation women and the college experience. Recognized by the university in 2005, the organization grew attracting women who felt they needed a group that empowered and supported woman, especially Latina women who came from the same cultural background.

Members of Latinas Unidas use Bobcat Build to come together.

The ladies of Latinas Unidas have been participating in Bobcat Build since they became an official organization. They use this opportunity to show their appreciation to the San Marcos Community for supporting Texas State.

“Bobcat Build is great for the girls because it gives them a chance to bond while giving back to the community. It builds teamwork and makes a lifetime of memories,” said Jackie Cortez, leader of Latinas Unidas public relations.

The members who participate in Bobcat Build receive a free Bobcat Build t-shirt to start off the event. Working on a Saturday to serve their community the members are able to meet new people, build relationships with Bobcat committees, participants, and community leaders.

“Being a minority group on campus brings us together,” said Nelly Vasquez, “What keeps us together is the trust and bond that we build from all the meetings and activities like Bobcat Build.”

At the build Latinas Unidas and all organizations are required to wear old shoes, jeans and long sleeves. It has been known to get a little dirty while doing to the job. They are given a task to complete and all the ladies work together to complete it.

“We talk about many topics, some being very emotional and some being just to relieve stress. But no matter what is said we are always there to support each other without judgment,” Jessica Sanchez.

From the activities that they participate in to the meeting they have every week Latinas Unidas is a strong group of women who come together to share with each other. Relationships have grown from working on activities such as Bobcat Build and it has made the group stronger as a whole.
